Steve Grand – All American Boy

Steve Grand

Steve Grand

There’s been a LOT of press lately about Chicago singer Steve Grand. He’s been called “Country Music’s First Openly Gay Singer” and things like that. It’s probably true since Kenny Chesney hasn’t come out yet. (Ok, that’s more a joke than anything. I have no clue if it’s true.)

Regardless, Steve Grand released his first music video on July 2 and essentially came out to the world. He came out to his family a long time ago and was sent to anti-gay therapy. He has spoken openly and said that his mom is now very proud of him and the road he’s taken.

The song, “All American Boy”, is about unrequited love. He meets a guy at a party, they become friends and hang out for a while. Steve and the guy eventually do some skinny dipping, and in that classic moment most of us have had, misreads the signals and gives the guy a kiss. Dude isn’t into it and leaves. They catch up later at another party and dude (yeah, I don’t have another word) gives him a hug and the “Let’s be friends” look – Steve’s heartbroken.

This morning Good Morning America (ABC -> Disney) aired an interview (above) and talked about the video. They mention the kiss and showed the scene…. but cut away a few frames before and didn’t show the kiss. A short man-on-man kiss is a bit too much for America at 8am apparently. Or maybe they want you to watch the video for yourself. Probably not. The mouse can be a bit family-oriented at times.

There has been an outpouring of support for Steve on his Facebook page, including from myself, and sales of his single on BandCamp (name your price) are shooting up. In just a week, the video is over 650,000 views on YouTube and as the press catches on to the story, you’ll just keep seeing this grow.

Steve Grand is not covered by a label. He put himself into debt to produce the song, and spent just $7000 on the video. I’m completely amazed by this as both the song and the video are so well produced you would think he had major backing on both.

Given the talent and heart demonstrated by his performance, both in the music and interviews, I’ve got no doubt that Steve will have A&R guys from many labels hunting him down and trying to sign him. I’m hoping to hear much more from Steve Grand.

And as to the unrequited love… Steve’s a very attractive guy so I have no doubt that he’ll find a man who deserves him soon.
