Musical Interlude

I gotta say that I love Scissor Sisters and this song is so catchy, friendly, poppy and uplifting that I get happy everytime I hear it. Came on the radio at work the other day and I was reminded of this video. The boy doing it is cute and obviously loves it a lot. Anyway, hope it makes you happy.

The Scissor Sisters – I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’

Touring Vancouver some more

Christopher and some giant wood

Christopher and some giant wood

Another beautiful day in the city of Vancouver, and another amazing weekend spent mostly out of doors along the paths and streets of this amazing city.

Today, we took a bus over to Kitsilano Beach and headed west from there. We really enjoyed the walk since it was something different from our usual strolls along the familiar shores of downtown. The houses, the views, the architecture and the surprising lack of smokers was amazingly refreshing.

We watched a lot of kids and families at play on the beach, and there were a LOT of cute dogs playing along the beach and walking politely with their people.

We took some video too, and Ill post that shortly. Weve been taking video whenever we can to share with friends and family in other places. Mostly to rub their noses in it show them how nice Vancouver is in the hopes theyll come and visit us once in a while. We have a borrowed video camera from work and figure that as long as we have it, we might as well take full advantage of it. Anyway, here‘s the videos. Enjoy, feel free to chip in with comments.

And this is from today:

Hot Cowboy

Hot Cowboy!

Hot Cowboy!

In general, I like a good cowboy. There is something about the mystique that goes along with them, and I am not just talking about Brokeback Mountain. My enjoyment goes way back. I do not, for a minute, think this guy is a real cowboy or has even ever been on a horse or farm before this photo shoot, but he is handsome, muscular and sexy enough that I am willing to let it go. Enjoy.

J.J. Abrams meet Star Trek

Safety first – there are NO spoilers below. It is safe to read this.

First, as you know I’m a big geek of the old school geeks. Which pretty much means I have to worship Star Trek and all things Trek. Which is not true, and therefore I should be kicked out of the club.

Don’t get me wrong, I do love me some good Trek, but over the last few years I’ve abandoned my Trek-ness. TNG was great but otherwise I haven’t been grabbed. I hardly watched DS9 or Voyager, and really tried to enjoy Enterprise, but none of them grabbed me. Like with most people, I liked about 1/2 the movies and generally agree the even numbered ones were the best.

I do like J.J. Abrams work, even Cloverfield, although it made me sick.

So – Star Trek + J.J. Abrams ~= Awesome! In theory right?

RIGHT! It was awesome. I loved Star Trek. The characters were mostly great, the casting was pretty much spot on and the story was action packed! They nailed a lot of the classic elements while at the same time rebooting the franchise without undoing everything that has gone before.

Chris and I headed out to the 10:00am showing on the first Saturday at the ScotiaBank Center in Vancouver. Cinema number 2 where we happily discovered a digital presentation (audio-wise) after last week’s non-digital (stereo only, seriously) viewing of Wolverine. I was happy, although I’m not convinced the surround was working for the first part of the movie.

So here’s the highlights, at least the way I see them.

Chris Pine (Kirk) and Chris Hemsworth (daddy Kirk) are hottness personified, I had to say that up front.

Zachary Quinto as Spock is absolutely perfect casting.

Simon Pegg and Anton Yelchin were annoying and Pegg’s little friend was stupid. The problem isn’t the actors, it’s the writing. For whatever reason, rather than using them to naturally evolve some comedy in a scene, Abrams ask you to “Open Wide” while he SHOVES comedy down your throat. They were always used as something of a comedic tool, but now it’s more tool and less comedy.

The mom’s are wasted. Jennifer Morrison as Mrs. Kirk and Winona Ryder as Amanda get very little screen time and although Morrison gets more, there’s so much other stuff going on, she get’s little lost.

Spock Prime (as IMDB.com lists him) was great, and the time travel wasn’t too annoying.

Eric Bana (ex-Hulk) was annoying. There were a few times I kept hearing his Bruce Banner voice and expecting him to Hulk out when Kirk pissed him off.

J.J. Abrams and crew weren’t shy about straying from the source material, something that until now the Roddenberry camp has held near and dear to it`s heart. I remember reading that all the authors and writers and anybody working on anything Trek had to stick to the canon and weren’t allowed to mess with anything. Abrams must be held in high regard, being allowed to re-write history.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Everyone (character and actor) is given a fresh start. There’s the classic lines (“Damn it Jim, I’m a ….”, “It isn’t logical…” etc…) uttered in just the right way, a few moves that are traditional and expected, but except for Spock, it`s not being done in a way to MIMIC the original actor, but more as a nod to who these people are, while being aware that these aren’t the characters, or even the universe, that we expect it to be.

I think it’s refreshing and except for the scenes with Scotty and Chekov, I really enjoyed every minute of it, and can’t wait to see what’s next.

Playing “Where’s Jeff?” in Vancouver

Playing “Where’s Jeff?” in Vancouver could be a fun game, but I don’t think enough people know me to spot me. Maybe that’s a good thing. I don’t have a striped red shirt and jaunty toque like some people, so that may make me harder to spot in a crowd.

Although I still have the ’70s porn star moustache thing going on so that may make it a little easier.

Today, on the last day of my vacation, I had intended to get out and do some sightseeing or touring or something but instead got several emergency emails from work and ended up going in for 3 hours. Yup. Check out the dedication! I spent the whole time I was there solving a series of problems, which in general were of my own making. But also due to a lack of foresight and testing. Sucked.

I left work at 2:30, got home, had some lunch, walked the dog, played with the dog, then headed downtown to meet Chris. Chris had to go to the doctor for his broken ass leg problem again. More drugs, more tests, more pain. Poor guy.

So I hung out at the Starbucks in Chapters for a while trying to accomplish some of my work for the day. It was loud and noisy and hot. Apparently men swarm in about 10 minutes before I got there and form a series of impromptu chess tournaments. It was kind of interesting. Some 20-somethings playing chess against what could be their grandfathers. Quite a range. Seems like speed chess since the matches didn’t last very long.

I met Chris in front of Vancouver Optical where I had perused their latest series of displays. They always have such interesting windows. I usually like their October ones best, when they get a bunch of props from horror movies made for local productions. A little gruesome, but fun!

Now I’m hanging out at the Starbucks at Helmcken and Howe across the street from the doctors office. Chris is in getting his bursitis checked and fixed, I hope. Turns out he’s not alone. Another friend also has bursitis and has been off work for quite some time because she can’t sit for that long (Hi Jessica). That’s gotta suck.

When Chris is done, I’m hoping for a long-ish but leisurely wander home. I need some downtime before we hit the couch for the night. And undoubtedly the dog will pounce on us the minute we get home.

See, that game of “Where’s Jeff?” would have totally sucked. Outside of home, I’ve been in the same 5 blocks all day.
