Justin Chatwin and Dragonball

ComicBookMovie.com posted more pictures and information about the Dragonball movie today. I personally don’t care and don’t even KNOW what Dragonball is, per se. However, my former employee and friend Justin Chatwin is playing the lead.

You may remember Justin from such movies as The Chumscrubbers, War Of The Worlds, The Invisible and even an episode of Lost where he played an undercover law enforcement officer who Locke took in. Oops.

NEW Dragonball Pics and interview

Way back in like 1998 Justin applied to work at the Bay Theatre in Nanaimo BC. His pluck impressed he. He even sent a nice thank you card after his interview. I teased him about it a bit, but I did hire him. He was fresh-faced, cute, super friendly and personable and a VERY hard worker while he worked for me. During that time his first ever acting work came out. A TV Commercial for Telus (phone company).

Not long after he started seriously acting, and I kept seeing him on TV in Mysterious Ways and other shows. Also he got movie roles. I saw him at a Christmas party a few years ago, and he came into Casting Workbook a few times. Then he moved to LA and I haven’t seen him off the screen since.

He seems to be doing alright for himself in that he’s working. So kudos to Justin Chatwin.

Up-and-comer – Bret Ryan

When I first moved to B.C. everyone told me B.C. stood for “Bring Cash” – a fun little play on the percieved expense of living in this wonderland. Today was B.C. day and given the crowds at Metrotown, I think that’s what B.C. Day is about.

I did my part, buying groceries for the family (nothing else, despite an intention to buy pants and socks) and lunch. While out there, I stumbled upon a gaggle or 2 of teenaged girls screaming for their latest minute-long crush – Bret Ryan. Chris and I couldn’t help but mock the publicity photos on the stage. He looked like a 2008 version of Rod Stewart from the 70′s. Seriously. See the picture. The one in the suit. Rod Stewart or Leif Garret.

So – I didn’t wait for him to take the stage, I went and did my thing then came back. He’s a cute kid, winning smile, lion’s mane of shaggy blonde (ish) hair etc. but man, the acoustics at Metrotown and the over-echoy production made the music impossible to listen too.

This was the end of his 11 date coast-to-coast tour brought to us by Family Channel. I wish him well. Maybe he’ll hook up with Miley Cyrus and make babies with beautiful hair and record deals, but no talent. Ouch.

His unofficial MySpace page has more interesting photos.

Half way through summer

So it occurs to me, at the end of this long weekend, that we’re basically half way through summer. That’s it. Not terribly profound.

This was a long weekend. 3-days. Whee. Vancouver celebrated it’s gay pride yesterday (Sunday) and today most of those people were in recovery. Either from drinking and celebrating, or from sun-stroke. Possibly a few twisted ankles from ridiculously high-heels (men shouldn’t wear heels without practice).

I did go to the Pride events briefly. Yes, I’m a bad gay man. I didn’t sit and watch the parade for 3 hours. I also didn’t spend more hours shopping at the festival, nor did I go to the bear beer garden. I did go to the festival at Sunset Beach and had a good wander while 90% of the people were still at the parade.

Second booth I walked past was Entre Nous – a dating company. Guy in the booth yells “Hey mister, where to you look for love?” His standard come-on and I was alone, Chris having to work and all. I turned quickly and replied – “My husband” and smiled. He looked stunned and finally came back with “good answer.” Poor guy, hope his day got better.

Next year, I seriously want West Coast Favours to have a booth there. For that, we need 3 things to happen. 1) Money to pay for it, 2) a concept of what to show and sell since chocolate won’t hold up in the sun, 3) product to take. Parts 1 and 2 need to be done before like March so I can book it. It’s going to be a busy year.
