Diabetes Education

Last night, Chris and I started a 4 evening Diabetes education program at St. Paul’s Hospital here in Vancouver.

I’ve had type II diabetes (adult onset, non-insulin dependent) for about 10 years. I was diagnosed one summer when no amount of soda or juice would stop my thirst. Why? Because I was just pumping more and more SUGAR into an already over-saturated body. My only saving grace was that I switched to juice so I was getting good vitamins. But my sugars were 19 (normal is below 6 for a normal person, over 7 indicates diabetes in general). So I went to the doctor and got diagnosed.

Now, 10 years later, we’re back to education. It’s really a good thing. Relearning about nutrition, health and exercise and what the potential complications are. Retinopathy (eye problems), gum disease, kidney failure, heart problems, circulation, nerve damage. Not fun. But with education and proper control, I can hopefully avoid or at least delay these conditions.

And Chris is tremendously helpful. The boy can nag me like nobody’s business. Of course I’m as stubborn as a mule, but we’ll get through.

Visit http://www.jdrf.ca and consider picking up a few of their LIVE EASY bracelets. Even if you don’t want to wear them buy a few and consider it a donation. Supporting Juvenile Diabetes means less of a strain on healthcare as the population ages, and healthier kids overall.

More to follow.

Working For The Weekend

I hate working on the weekend. I mean, I hate doing my M-F 9-5 job on the weekend. This morning we’re re-working some servers to make things better and smoother. Should have taken 1/2 hour… We’re now 2.5 hours in and still banging our heads against the wall on a permissions problem for images.

Fun. Chris is at Chapters reading books. I haven’t even showered yet.

I did talk to my dad for a few minutes, but had to abort that when I needed to resume testing again. Looks like we’re nearly done. In that we’re giving up. Luckily it’s not a critical system, just the new version that’s not working. The old one is working.

Happy New Year + 18 days

Ok. I’m bad. Really bad. I don’t post. Chris kicked my ass for not posting, and so have a few of my loyal readers. So now is the time for me to pick up my quill and post. What’s happened? Well, my brother got married just before Christmas, his ex remarried on Christmas eve. Chris and I went to see The Producers on New Years Eve, then bought Subway sandwiches and went home. Quiet night.

So, Chris has been telling me he loved me for a year. And now he has gone ahead and proven that it’s permanent… or had better be. LOL. Last Saturday we went and got him a tattoo (number 8 for him) of my initials between his shoulders. I picked the design and color. I’ll be getting one of his initials later in the spring. I’m still a tattoo virgin so I’m taking a little longer. Not that I don’t love him, just not wanting to rush into tattoos. I’d like my first one to be a little panda tattoo (I love pandas) but I’m having trouble finding a solid design.

Chris is changing jobs again. He got so fed up with getting up at 4:00 every day, he went and found a new job. This time he’s driving a truck for a food delivery service. The pay is better, the hours are slighly more reasonable (7 am – 5 pm) and he doesn’t have to wear a polyesther vest. Hooray!
